Formed in 2000, Agricultural Information Management, Inc. (AIM) is a software and consulting firm created to serve production agriculture. Our main focus is currently the dairy industry, but many of the products and services we supply can be adapted to other agricultural enterprises.

Our mission is to provide agricultural companies and producers with tools and data that give them the information they need to make profitable decisions. We accomplish this through our software, code libraries, services, and training. Our team of dedicated professionals has more than 30 years of working with information systems and providing associated training to the agricultural sector. What Is DairyORACLE™?

DairyORACLE™ is a computer simulator of dairy management originally developed by Dr. William Marsh at the University of Minnesota. It was expanded to include disease effects by Dr. Kinsel as his graduate work. This model allows users to take current dairy performance data and forecast the ripple effects of management changes on future herd demographics, health, production, and economics.

Who Should Use It And Why?

DairyORACLE™ is intended for researchers, extension personnel, dairy advisors, and dairy managers. We all pencil out the outcomes of possible management changes on napkins. DairyORACLE™ is a fancy napkin! It allows users to "try before you buy". Given a starting point, the effects of management changes can be simulated over the next 6 years. The simulation is not run just once, but many times to give the range of possible outcomes as a measure of risk. DairyORACLE™ has been used in several scientific studies.

Encryption Technology

Data movement and storage is a critical part of our modern business world. "Big data" is growing and will continue to grow. Information is an integral part of our everyday management decisions. At the same time, our society has become ever more mobile and mobile devices allow us to manage our information sources.

Most current data systems are driven by "relational databases" that store data in related "tables". A key principal of relational databases is that, whenever possible, data should be stored as numbers as numbers require much less storage space than text and are much faster for computers to process.

Near field communication (NFC) chips are a recent technology for storing data on inexpensive stickers about the size of a quarter that can be embedded in or attached to objects. This is the technology used by touching your hotel key card to the door to open your room or pay your bill by touching your credit card to a reader. Nearly all modern cell phones have NFC reader capability. NFC chips are both read and write ... they can be updated as well as read. The beauty of this technology is that information about an object can be stored with an object.

AIM has developed technology for encrypting and compressing database data about an object onto an NFC chip. Records about a cow can be stored with the cow. Data about a tank of milk can be updated and stored on the tank. And so on ... This data can be read and written with a modern cell phone with our software on it. Permissions can be set to control who can see and update what data.

Database Design

AIM has over 20 years of database design experience. Our initial desktop projects utilized the Borland Database Engine(BDE). Future desktop projects included the Microsoft Access database. Our initial websites used Microsoft SQL Server. We used the SQL Lite database engine in our Android device apps. Over the last few years, we have moved away from desktop and mobile device app development and focused on Internet-based solutions. We have migrated away from Microsoft-based software and have focused on web development with ORACLE-based products and mySQL.

We believe an investment in careful database design is essential to building solid code. Too often, software developers struggle with a poor design. We rely on mySQL Workbench as our database management tool and use it to help our customers understand the database schema of their project. Like an architect discussing house plans with a prospective buyer before a builder ever starts building, the importance of this phase of a project can not be overstated. Money allocated to this phase of a project is never misspent as a flawed design will cost far more in the future.

Proper database design is an iterative process that requires discussion with all parties involved. For the developer, client input is mission critical to a successful project. Following best management practices is essential. The database design is the foundation the project sits on.

Software Design

From desktop applications, to mobile applications, o web sites, AIM has over 20 years of expertise with all phases of software design. Our roots were in desktop apps developed using Pascal, Delphi, and Visual Basic. We also have experience using C and C++. Early databases include the BDE and Microsoft Access. For the last 18 months, AIM has been converting their suite over to web applications. We believe this is the future of software development. In the past, stable Internet connections and data storage hindered web applications, but with the advancement of cellular connectivity and advances in browser storage technology, Internet-based solutions have become the best choice for software delivery.

AIM developers have experience with more than a dozen computer languages and their web sites use the latest coding languages and practices. Our designs are based on Object Oriented techiniques including the MVC design philosophy. We use Balsamiq Mockups for user interface design so our customers can see what a product will look like before it is built. Our Android mobile device apps were built with the Eclipse IDE and SQL Lite database.

We have experience building websites using HTML 5 elments, PHP server scripting, Javascript browser scripting, CSS styling, and mySQL databases. We have experience with widely used Javascript libraries such as DataTables grids (http://www.datatables.net) and calendar libraries such as FullCalendar (http://fullCalendar.io). We believe that using mainstream technologies improve the ability to debug and maintain code with changing developers and technology. Dairy Evaluation

AIM staff has considerable experience as dairy evaluators. During his residency at Washington State University from 1990 - 1993, Dr. Kinsel was the primary field investigator with the university's Field Disease Investigation Unit (FDIU). This included visiting more than 250 Washington dairy farms to assist local veterinarians in troubleshooting herd problems. He has authored text book chapters and scientific journal articles on field investigation based on this experience.

Dr. Kinsel then served as a veterinary medical officer and State Animal Health Epidemiologist for the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) from 2005 to 2009. During this time, he was responsible for investigating disease outbreaks and developing animal health event response manuals. He received certification as a USDA Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician and an Incident Commander in the FEMA Incident Command System.

Dr. Ingawa also has a long history of working with dairy farms. While in his homeland of Nigeria, he was in charge of operations at the Runca range station. During his graduate training at Louisiana State University, Dr. Ingawa worked with both dairy genetics and mastitis control. Both Dr. Kinsel and Dr. Ingawa are certified FARM animal welfare evaluators with the Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program developed by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). Epidemiologic Consulting

AIM founder, Dr. Mark Kinsel, has worked as an epidemiologic consultant for animal agricultural firms and farms for more than 30 years. He has taught epidemiology while serving as a graduate student and university professor at Washington State University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Idaho. Dr. Kinsel also coordinated a basic epidemiology workshop at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) annual meetings for a number of years. His career as a university faculty member included many papers on risk factor analysis.

From 2005-2009, Dr. Kinsel served as a veterinary medical officer and State Animal Health Epidemiologist for the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA). During this time, he was responsible for investigating disease outbreaks, advising the state veterinarian on epidemiologic issues, and developing animal health event response protocols.

Dr. Kinsel has also developed numerous epidemiologic calculators and software libraries. His PhD work was to add the disease effects to a dairy management simulation model called "DairyORACLE". This model allows users to investigate the ripple effect of disease management on future health, production, and farm economics.

Statistical Consulting

AIM has been providing statistical consulting to the livestock industry for over 20 years. From sample size calculations to experimental design to conducting statistical analysis, AIM staff are able to provide scientific-based evaluations. Members of our staff serve as statistical method reviewers for several peer- reviewed scientific journals. During Dr. Kinsel's time as a university professor, he was a pioneer in applying cohort analysis techniques and statistical process control (SPC) analysis to agricultural data. As a graduate student, he managed the world's largest standardized dairy records database.

We have served as statistical consultants to several large, national organizations. We've provided sample size and data analysis to firms such as the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) FARM animal welfare program. At it's peak, our MilkLab system received and analyzed daily bulk tank data from nearly 1 out of 4 dairies in the United States.
